How Can CBD Help My Pet?

You’ve probably heard of CBD oil, a non-psychoactive cannabis extract that many people turn to for natural health and wellness. It’s well-regarded for helping relieve sleep disorders, anxiety, stress, and so much more. Could it do the same for pets?

Yes! While research is ongoing, many dog owners see the positive benefits of specialized CBD pet products for themselves. Here’s what you can expect from CBD tinctures formulated for your furry friends!

What Is CBD?

petsCBD is short for cannabidiol; it’s a compound called a cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. While there are hundreds of cannabinoids in weed, they have many effects; one called delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol – better known as THC – gives off the high. CBD does not and is better known for its therapeutic benefits.

Research tells us that the cannabinoids in weed affect the body via receptors on the endocannabinoid system (ECS) located in the nervous system. All animals with a nervous system – humans and dogs included – have an ECS, and as such, CBD could affect the receptors.

You can separate CBD from the plant matter and other cannabinoids to create pure oils, tinctures, and capsules. When the producer strictly controls the creation of their products, CBD will not contain any psychoactive ingredients like THC. Most CBD products are actually derived from hemp and not from cannabis – it’s a form of the plant that is naturally low in THC.

How Can CBD Help My Pet?

CBD can help your pet much like how it can help you. How it interacts with the ECS may help maintain balance in the body and keep it in a normal healthy state. Specially formulated CBD drops or dog treats can ease many different conditions your dog may suffer from, whether it’s occasionally or chronically. These include:

  • Anxiety and stress
  • Nausea
  • Chronic inflammation
  • Moderate arthritis and joint pain
  • Digestive issues
  • Seizures

Currently, there has been no formal study on how CBD affects dogs. However, anecdotal evidence from dog owners suggests it’s highly successful at treating pain and anxiety, as well as helping to control seizures; the latter is one of the most well-researched benefits of CBD for humans! (Although more research may be needed for some of these effects on pets.)

What Are The Possible Side Effects Of CBD?

CBD could have some potential side effects on pets based on how CBD affects humans. These are likely if the dosage is off, and can include:

  • Dry mouth, as CBD can decrease saliva production; your dog might be very thirsty if they’ve taken a high dose.
  • Lower blood pressure. Even though a dose of CBD oil from a dropper is small, it could create feelings of light-headedness.
  • Drowsiness. CBD’s calming effects could cause some drowsiness, especially if taken in higher doses.

To minimize any potential side effects, make sure you follow the proper dosage on the packaging and never give your dog CBD products made for humans. While we all have an ECS, humans and dogs still have different systems. We also recommend talking to your veterinarian before using CBD for treatment for any claimed benefits to ensure this product is safe for your pet.

If your pup could use some of the benefits of CBD, we suggest Natuur CGD Dog Tincture. Carefully curated with simple, all-natural ingredients, Natuur’s CBD isolate comes in 100% pure MCT oil with all-natural flavours. Your dog will love it!
